The Daltons

The Dalton brothers—Emmett, Grattan, and Bob—were sharpshooters who grew up near Coffeyville, Kansas. They were cousins of the Youngers. The Dalton Gang gained some attention in 1890 for robbing trains, but they weren’t recognized as the ruthless outlaws that their cousins were. This bothered the Dalton brothers; they wanted to be famous and feared. This desire proved to be their downfall.

The Daltons met their doom in their hometown of Coffeyville when they tried to rob two banks at once in 1892. They rode into town disguised in fake beards and mustaches, but townspeople recognized them anyway. They also picked a bad time to pull off the heist. The street in front of the two banks was under repair, and the robbers had to leave their horses a block away and walk to the banks on foot.

As the Daltons approached the banks, citizens ran home to get their guns. Merchants passed out firearms to everyone around. The gang managed to seize $20,000 from one of the banks, but they struck out at the second bank when the teller convinced them that the vault had a time lock and could not be opened. The whole town was armed when the Daltons charged out of the banks. A horrendous battle ensued. The gang killed four citizens in the gunfight. All members of the gang, except Emmett, were also killed. Emmett served fifteen years in prison.
